“why does everything you wear have to be all spiky?” said my mom today as we left the house. She absolutely hates the way I dress. She doesn’t understand why I wear spiked vests or dye my hair. She mocks me for the way I dress. Sometimes she doesn’t like to be seen in public with me.

But the thing is for me, all the spiky and studded stuff for me is armor. It’s armor to fend off all the people who call me weird,freak, clown, who whisper as I go by, or tell their children not to dress like me. I am a plus size woman and I constantly wear sexy things like mini skirts and lingerie out and about. My spiked vest makes me feel fearless and like I can go outside looking like I want to. Also I get catcalled a lot, but when I put on my punk clothes and give people a sneer it makes me feelsafer.The fact that a spiked vest makes me feel safe against predators is stupid and the fact that I feel like I can’t go outside without is stupider.But it works.

I wish I could say all this to people who ask me why I dress the way I do but it’s kinda impossible.
